I rather liked 2012. We had some good times. The Olympics were brilliant. I saw the 8-hour play Gatz, and Vincent and Flavia’s Midnight Tango show. My sister and I went to see Strictly Come Dancing being filmed – we’ve applied every year and 2012 was the year that finally delivered those glittery tickets into our hands. I joined Twitter and met some very lovely bookish folk. I started this blog. My upgrade interview for full PhD status was successful. So all in all 2012 was more up than down. Yay!
I also read 177 books. I think that is probably quite a lot, but I wasn’t pushing myself towards a particular figure. I do read fast – history is a word-heavy subject, so you have to to keep up. I enjoyed the majority of the books I read. There was a mixture of literary fiction, teen, fantasy, non-fiction, anything that caught my eye really. What I have noticed is that I only reviewed a fraction of what I read, either on the blog or at Waterstones.com. That seems a shame, as I enjoy writing up the reviews. As my circumstances are changing this year, with my branch of Waterstones having closed for good, I have more time available and I intend to put it to good use. Some of that extra time will be spent writing more blog posts about fabulous books. (Just in case Drew reads this, I also promise to spend more time working on my thesis so one day I can get a proper job again and he can play a lot of golf).
I have a mixture of old and new, fiction and non-fiction, adult and children’s. The blue one standing up is my old copy of What Katy Did that I bought from Marks and Spencers in the 1980s. I’m re-reading that for a new Children’s Book Club I’ve started up with my nieces and nephews. Each month we each pick any book we like the look of, read it, then bring it to our meet-up and talk about what we liked/disliked. The kids are aged between 5-11, so I’m hoping we get a good mix of titles. Our first meeting is on Saturday, and we are making a collaborative blog post about it. I’m hoping we have a lot of fun.
I’m also having a look around the blogosphere to see what Reading Challenges are out there; maybe I can sign up for one or more. I’d love to know if there are any you guys are doing this year. Or are you going free and easy, as the mood takes you? If you have any must-reads, I’d love to hear them too.
Happy New Year!
